Tony Butkovich was a real-life American football star who gave up a promising professional career to enlist in the Marine Corps during World War II. A former college fullback, he played in the legendary Christmas Eve 1944 Mosquito Bowl game on Guadalcanal. He is portrayed by Ray Nicholson in the film adaptation of Buzz Bissinger’s book.
