An acoustic ballad is a slow, narrative song built primarily on guitar or piano, foregrounding voice and lyric over production. Alex Warren’s catalog works in this tradition, updated for the streaming era with swelling choruses. In this story, the acoustic ballad form is the vehicle of his grief writing — songs plain-spoken enough that fans who have lost parents hear their own lives in them and bring ashes to his shows in response.
