A condition in which a blood clot forms in a deep vein, most commonly in the leg. Deep vein thrombosis, often shortened to DVT, may cause pain, swelling or warmth, but it can also develop with few clear symptoms. Its main danger is that part of the clot can break free and travel to the lungs. Treatment usually involves blood-thinning medication and careful monitoring.
