A dystopia is an imagined society that is oppressive, dehumanising or quietly broken, presented as a warning about where real trends might lead. Unlike loud apocalypses, many literary dystopias are gentle on the surface and devastating underneath, showing ordinary people adapting to systems that diminish them. Dystopian stories use their invented worlds to ask urgent questions about technology, power, conformity and human dignity.
