Okinawa is a Japanese island that was the site of one of World War II’s bloodiest battles in the spring of 1945. The 82-day campaign cost over 12,000 American and more than 100,000 Japanese lives. Many of the young Marines who played in the 1944 Mosquito Bowl football game would later fight — and some die — at Okinawa.
