Overtime is the extra period played in American football and other sports when a game is tied at the end of regulation time. Rules vary by league and by regular season or playoffs, and modern NFL rules aim to give both teams a chance to possess the ball, especially in postseason games. Overtime produces some of sport’s most dramatic finishes.
