The quarterback is the leader of a football team’s offense, the player who receives the snap, reads the defence and decides whether to throw, hand off or run. Great quarterbacks combine arm strength, accuracy, quick thinking and composure under pressure. The position is the most scrutinised in American sports, carrying responsibility for victories, defeats, play-calling communication and often the public identity of the entire franchise.
