The rumor mill is the informal machinery — fan sleuthing, entertainment media, social media decoding — that produces celebrity speculation before facts arrive. In this story, the mill processed one diamond ring, one son’s excited comments and one ring-themed caption into a week of international headlines about Hurley and Cyrus, despite no confirmation and unreachable representatives. The mill’s fuel, unusually, was a story whose worst case is that two people are happy.
