Prince Harry Reveals His Family’s Move Back to Britain Was a Last-Minute Decision: ‘It Was Very Short’

Prince Harry has finally spoken about one of the most talked-about celebrity moves of the year — and the story behind it is even more spontaneous than royal watchers expected. In a newly released sit-down for One More Question, the Duke of Sussex revealed that his family’s return to Britain was not years in the planning. It came together fast — remarkably fast.

“We’ve had plans in the past,” Harry admitted, “and I think for lots of people, it’s like, if you’re going to make a big move like this, that’s going to take a lot of planning. For us, it was very short.”

A Chat Months in the Making

The interview itself was filmed in September and released on Oct. 20 as part of the men’s style bible GQ‘s short-form series — a format built around one final, revealing question. For Harry, 42, that question opened the door to the first detailed account of how he, Meghan Markle, 45, and their two young children ended up swapping California sunshine for British autumn.

Harry described the decision less as a strategy and more as a feeling. The family had thought about a return “and considered” it before, he said, but the trigger was a moment when everything simply fell into place. “When certain stars align and it’s clear that this should or probably will end up being the case, then we lean into that,” he explained.

Six Years of California Life

The move closes a chapter that began in 2020, when the couple stepped back from royal duties and settled in Montecito, the sun-soaked Santa Barbara enclave that became their home base for six years. There, they built a life away from the palace machine — launching the Archewell Foundation, raising Archie, now 7, and Lilibet, now 5, and developing the independent projects that have defined their post-royal brand.

It was not a clean break with Britain, though. Harry has kept a busy diary of UK engagements, from the Invictus Games — the adaptive sports championship he founded for wounded service personnel — to the WellChild Awards, where he has long championed seriously ill children and their families.

The August Decision

News first broke in August that the Sussexes planned to establish a private home base in Britain for an extended stay while holding onto their properties in California and Portugal. The family arrived back in the UK that same month — a remarkably quick turnaround that now makes perfect sense in light of Harry’s “very short” comment.

By September, the biggest sign of how serious the move was had already landed: Archie and Lilibet were enrolled in a British school. For a family that has guarded its children’s privacy fiercely, putting them into the British system felt like a statement of intent.

Why Schools Sealed the Deal

Asked what pulled the family across the Atlantic, Harry pointed to “opportunities for the family” — chief among them the chance to give his children a British education. “I didn’t know how important it was to me,” he confessed. “I always thought it was going to be something that we would try and do, but now they’ve been in school for two weeks. They’re loving it, and it’s just giving them a whole different experience.”

It is the kind of admission that reframes the whole relocation: less a dramatic royal homecoming, more a father’s bid to give his kids the childhood texture he remembers. Harry spoke movingly about wanting to show Archie and Lilibet the place he grew up — “to have them have the experiences to some extent that I had, the good rather than necessarily the bad.”

The Reunion That Melted Royal Watchers

The move came shortly after a summer trip to Britain that carried its own emotional weight. The family reunited with King Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House — and Archie and Lilibet saw their grandfather in person for the first time in four years. For royal watchers hoping for a thaw in family relations, the royal family reunion felt like a hopeful sign.

The trip also hinted at Harry’s renewed presence on home soil. In early October he appeared at the Imperial War Museum in London, and on Oct. 15 he joined Meghan at a community recording studio in Nottingham — a reminder that the Sussexes intend to be seen, and to work, in Britain.

Even a Pop Star Saw It Coming

Perhaps the move was less sudden than it looked. At the WellChild Awards in September 2025, British singer Joss Stone told Hello! that Harry had quizzed her about her own experience of moving her family back to the UK after years in Nashville. “He also asked about how we were settling back in and was genuinely interested in our move home,” she said. “Maybe Harry will move back too. That would be nice.”

A year later, her hunch proved right — and the British royal heir‘s younger brother is now the one unpacking boxes.

What Comes Next

Harry was careful not to frame the relocation as a full-time return to royal life. The California and Portugal properties stay, and the family is describing the British base as an extended stay rather than a permanent reset. But for now, the Duke sounds like a man relieved to have acted on instinct.

“This is an opportunity, let’s do it now,” he said of the family’s thinking. After six years of planning their independence move by move, the Sussexes have discovered that sometimes the biggest decisions are the ones you barely plan at all.
