Inside Téa Leoni and Tim Daly’s Relationship, from Their On-Set Meet-Cute to Getting Married

Years after Téa Leoni and Tim Daly met on the set of Madam Secretary, they are playing a couple on-screen again, and this time the art is imitating life more closely than ever. The real-life couple, who married in July 2025 after more than a decade together, now star as newlyweds in NBC’s new sitcom Newlyweds, premiering October 23.

Their story is one of Hollywood’s great slow burns: a meet-cute on a CBS political drama, years of quietly building a life together, and finally a wedding that made their off-screen romance official. From first spark to marriage milestone, here is how two costars became one of television’s favorite real-life couples.

The On-Set Meet-Cute

Leoni and Daly first met as costars on Madam Secretary, the CBS political drama that premiered in September 2014. Leoni played Elizabeth McCord, a former CIA analyst called up to the office of the Secretary of State, while Daly played her husband of two decades, Henry McCord. The chemistry was immediate. Daly later told Collider he got along with his on-screen wife “really, really well,” praising her work ethic and humor.

They shared more than a set: Daly revealed the two had both attended the same Vermont boarding school, years apart, an experience he said shaped their down-to-earth personalities. “She’s not a whiner,” he said, describing a woman perfectly happy sleeping in a wet sleeping bag or a fancy hotel. In a 2021 podcast interview, he recalled his first impression: “That’s a cool girl. She’s a no-bulls—er. She’s here to do this acting work.”

A Whirlwind That Wasn’t

Romance rumors first swirled in July 2014, when Leoni was seen in the audience at a play Daly was starring in over the Fourth of July weekend in Dorset, Vermont. At the time, Leoni was finalizing her divorce from ex-husband David Duchovny; the split was finalized the following August, after the pair had separated three years earlier. They had been married for 17 years and share two children, Kyd and Madelaine.

In December 2014, PEOPLE confirmed that Leoni and Daly were dating. Their timeline stretched across the full run of Madam Secretary, which aired from 2014 to 2019, and they made their red carpet debut in April 2015 at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Far from a whirlwind romance, theirs was a longtime partnership built in the open, one premiere and press tour at a time.

Getting Married

After more than a decade together, Daly and Leoni wed on July 12, 2025, in a private ceremony in New York, surrounded by only their immediate family. The nuptials made official what Leoni had been joking about for years: she had been calling Daly her husband on social media since long before the wedding, once writing “Happy Birthday to the best husband a gal could ever have on TV.”

Daly later revealed the proposal story had a twist. “I actually asked Téa to marry me about nine years ago, and she said, ‘Yes, let’s just wait a minute.’ Then nine years later, she asked me,” he said. “So anyway, we got it done. I like being married to Téa.”

Newlyweds, On Screen and Off

Now the screen couple returns to television together in Newlyweds, playing Jeanie and James, a whirlwind-courtship pair described by NBC as “a free-spirited woman and a buttoned-up professor who marry impetuously.” The TV couple that once pretended to be married for six seasons is now actually married, and Daly calls the new chapter “a miracle.”

“We spent six years pretending to be married on TV, and now we get to do it again, but we actually are married,” he said at an NBCUniversal event. “It’s really fun, and it’s cool, and we still like each other.” Leoni added that the world got darker and they wanted to get lighter, and that they simply wanted to spend their days together. A Partnership Built in Public

What set Leoni and Daly apart from most Hollywood couples was how unhurried they were. There were no rushed announcements and no tabloid drama, just a steady accumulation of joint appearances: the 2015 White House Correspondents’ Dinner as guests of Bob Schieffer and Madeleine Albright, a PaleyFest Madam Secretary screening in 2016, and a 2023 opening-night party for La Femme Theatre’s The Night of the Iguana at Sardi’s. Each outing reinforced the same impression: two people who genuinely liked being around each other.

Their shared values ran deeper than red carpets. Both threw themselves into advocacy, with Leoni’s UNICEF board work complementing Daly’s leadership of The Creative Coalition. In June 2022, Daly posted a UNICEF video narrated by Leoni, encouraging followers to support the organization’s Bridge Fund, with Leoni’s family matching donations in honor of her late father. It was activism as a couple’s project, and it endeared them to fans who had watched the relationship mature in real time.

When the wedding finally came on July 12, 2025, it was characteristically low-key: a private New York ceremony with immediate family only, confirmed by Leoni’s representative. After more than a decade together, there was nothing left to prove and nobody left to convince. The Newlyweds premiere on October 23 simply gives the public a front-row seat to what the couple has known for years.
